Nice places to live in Central Valley, CA?

My husband is getting promoted within his company, which means we will have to move. One of the most likely places he will work at will be the Modesto/Sacramento area of California. I’ve been checking the area out online, and all I see is negative things, like: stockton is the most illiterate city in America, modesto has the highest car theft rate, air pollution in the area rivals LA, etc. I lived in New York my whole life up until 2 years ago, so I’m used to crime/low income housing/homelessness/run down vacant lots and so on, but I have finally been able to work my way up from that and don’t really want to go back to it!

Does anyone have any recommendations for nice, middle class places to live in the Central Valley?

In case it helps, here’s a little more about us – we’re in our mid 20s, we like to bike or hike occasionally but we’re not nature nuts, we have a dog, we like to eat out/hang out in the city, and my husband prefers suburbs over living in the middle of the city.

I am trying to leave Sacramento, Ca and go to Boise Idaho 1 way, but i do not have a major credit card and I asked all my friends all we got is bank cards and pre paid visa cards. how come they dont accept those? i got 600 in cash for a 1 day rental and they wont let me pay cash. this is bull. is there anyplace that will let you pay with cash or a bank card or prepaid visa?

okie in my dream
it was raining and i was 16 (im turning 15 this year) anyways i driving in my car with my older sister to sacramento because she wanted to give something to her boyfriend before him and his family left somewhere then we got lost around a neighborhood and so i stopped at a house that was 2 stories high and then i walked up to the door step and a hot guy opened the door but he was turned around when he opened the door talking to his brother and sister ..his sister said “you need to settle down on someone you really have to stop sleeping around and stick with someone that you will LOVE” and then he said “Well i’m not that type of guy i’m not gona stop what i love to do” and then he turned to look at me but he didn’t say anything all he did was look at me it was like he was frozen but anyways it took me a couple of mins to ask him if he knew an address that me and my sister were trying to get to and i showed him the address then he finally talked and said yes and he said he would show it to me and so he was telling me the directions but i didn’t get it so he told me that he’d show me so he walked back in and then grabbed his keys and an umbrella and came outside and then he held the umbrella above me and just smiled and so we walked to my car and talked the whole way and we found out that we had a lot in common… and then we stopped at my car and he asked me out but i turned him down but he was persistent and so i agreed to him after he asked me for the 3rd time then he showed us the way and then we got out of the car and it stopped raining and so my sister ran inside the house then the guy got out and we just had a casual conversation and then we had a moment… we just stared at eachother for the longest time… then he slowly leaned in and he kissed me then he said “your the one” and smiled…then i woke up

i had this dream once last week and i dreamt of it again last night and everything was the same …. ever since i had this dream last week i’ve been getting de ja vu a lot and then when i dreamt this last night it was all i could think about today and nothing else when i day dream it comes to something then out of no where i start to get into a deep sleep and i dream of this… does my dream mean anything?

Do Gays Really Want Tolerance (for themselves and others)?

Here is a story (from AP) about gays going after people who exercised their right to vote. I’ve also seen video on youtube of gays attacking people who were for prop 8. There have also been news stories of them going after churches and their congregations.
Is this the tolerance they scream so loud for?

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Supporters of the ballot measure that banned same-sex “marriage” in California have filed a lawsuit seeking to block their campaign finance records from public view, saying the reports have led to the harassment of donors.

“No one should have to worry about getting a death threat because of the way he or she votes,” said James Bopp, Jr., an attorney representing two groups that supported Proposition 8, Protect Marriage.com and the National Organization for Marriage California. “This lawsuit will protect the right of all people to help support causes they agree with, without having to worry about harassment or threats.”

The lawsuit, filed Wednesday in federal court in Sacramento, asks the court to order the secretary of state’s office to remove all donations for the proposition from its website. It also asks the court to relieve the two groups and “all similarly situated persons” from having to meet the state’s campaign disclosure requirements. That would include having to file a final report on Proposition 8 contributions at the end of January, as well as reports for any future campaigns the groups undertake.

Proposition 8, approved by 52.3 percent of California voters on Nov. 4, reversed a state Supreme Court decision allowing homosexual marriage. The measure’s opponents have asked the Supreme Court to overturn it.

The lawsuit filed Wednesday cites a series of incidents in which those who gave money to support Proposition 8 received threatening phone calls, e-mails and postcards. One woman claims she was told: “If I had a gun, I would have gunned you down along with each and every other supporter.” Another donor reported a broken window, one said a fliyer calling him a bigot was distributed around his hometown and others received envelopes containing suspicious white power, according to the lawsuit.

Businesses employing people who contributed to the Proposition 8 campaign have been threatened with boycotts, the suit said.

Supporters of the homosexual marriage ban fear the donor backlash will hurt their efforts to raise money in the future, perhaps to fight an initiative seeking to overturn the ban.

“Several donors have indicated that they will not contribute to committee plaintiffs or similar organizations in the future because of the threats and harassment directed at them as a result of their contributions…and the public disclosure of that fact,” the lawsuit said.

The suit said courts have held that laws requiring disclosure of campaign contributions can be overturned or restricted if a group can make “an uncontroverted showing” that identifying its members can result in economic reprisals or threats of physical coercion. California’s Political Reform Act, which voters approved in 1974, established disclosure requirements for candidates and campaign committees.

The secretary of state’s office and another defendant, the state’s Fair Political Practices Commission, declined to comment Thursday on the lawsuit. But Geoff Kors, executive director of Equality California, the homosexual-rights group that led the campaign against Proposition 8, called it hypocritical for supporters of the measure to try to overturn voter-approved campaign finance laws.

He said Proposition 8 supporters used campaign finance records during the campaign to threaten homosexual-rights supporters. “They’ve used these records to attack corporations, to attack individuals,” Kors said.

Peter Scheer, executive director of the First Amendment Coalition, which supports public access to government records and meetings, said the lawsuit is likely to be unsuccessful. But he also said the plaintiffs’ arguments are not trivial. “The problem with their argument, of course, is that campaign finance laws, both at the state and federal level, have been litigated endlessly now since Watergate and the argument has, in one form or another, been rejected,” Scheer said.

He said courts have consistently failed to agree that contributors have a right to donate directly and anonymously to a candidate or campaign. He said some states have less restrictive reporting requirements, but they always include disclosure of donors.

The Pledge

The year was 2408 and the world had been saved. Humanity had once washed over the Earth in a sea of destruction. With the signing of the Agreement after the Ruination the human race had retreated to self-sustained Cities to leave nature alone once and for all.
The Ruination, what could be said about it? In this short span of minutes enough weapon energy had been released by mankind to decimate the civilizations of Old. In the ages of savagery that followed, a few men stepped forward to take the reins of command to form the World State, united, powerful, and eternal. These men were the Controllers. The world was finally at peace.
The Controller strode through the halls of the Palace with a carefree look set upon his face. The man stood near seven feet tall and his face showed the scars of his many surgeries. The Controller’s surgeons had carved his cheekbones into dangerous points and black contacts had been inserted under his irises. If any man looked upon the Controller’s face they would have seen the point of his hideous operations. The Controller had designed his appearance to strike fear into the hearts of his subjects. The Controller walked to a window and looked upon the metropolis beneath him. Citizens moved about the streets to their assignments around the City, guided by the computer chips implanted into their brains at birth. The unique computer system that had been grafted into the Controller’s nervous system identified every citizen the Controller saw by number.
The lights on the opaque glass dome that encased the City glinted dully in the comparative darkness of the City below. In the distance, the gargantuan silicon factories began to warm up as they prepared to produce the wealth of Haven City. The Controller grinned, a vicious expression on the face of the deformed man, at the way the City moved. This was his City, the citizens were his people, and this was his world. The power of his World State compelled the Controller.
The Master of New Sacramento waited on his servant impatiently. The new day had arrived and he was restless sitting in his large manor. The Master stood five feet tall (for there had been a terrible error made during his enhancement surgery at birth) and he had piercing blue eyes that were nearly hidden by a crop of blond hair. The Master’s luxurious hovercar soared into the cavernous Hovercar Bay. The Master stepped into the car and his driver, a woman named Citizen 368, pulled the car away from the manor. The car traveled through the vast City, past citizens working at the silicon factories and past robots tending to the fields. The Master opaqued his window at that point to prevent himself from seeing any more of the lower class scum that populated the City.
The Ruins of Old Sacramento had always held a certain appeal for the Master. Here lay the ruins of a city of Old, one of the last remnants of the men who had cried out for the sense of order that the World State provided for all men. The car pulled up to the Ruins and the Master stepped out of the car to walk among the burned-out shells of buildings as Citizen 368 waited patiently for her Master.
“Curious,” said the Master, “that these men expanded so quickly, yet went out like a light in their last days,”
Citizen 638 said nothing because she knew that her Master was of the “odd” type that sometimes were born in the World State. The Master came to a building of the darkest ivory whose roof had collapsed a long time ago. He stopped for a moment and then went forth into the building to find himself in a hallway filled with books on shelves. The Master knew a little about books. They had been things made of paper that the men of Old had painted their characters on. Books had been banned in the World State because the Controllers considered them to be “destructive to the order of society”. The Master knew how to read characters and he picked a book out and opened it to a page that read

The Master wished no more to prowl the Ruins of a dead civilization. He motioned to Citizen 368 to start the hovercar and he got in and the vehicle sped away into the sunrise.

Limo service to SMF airport?

Should I buy a car from the CA State Auction?

I am wondering if anyone knows how well the State usually takes care of their cars. I know that once the car hits 150,000 miles they will usually sell it at an auction. I am thinking about trying to get a car at one of these auction in Sacramento. The cars are sold as is. The website says “All vehicles and lot items are sold “AS IS”, “WHERE IS.” THERE ARE NO WARRANTIES (EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED), ADJUSTMENTS, REPAIRS, REFUNDS, OR EXCHANGES.”

So I am just wondering if this would be a good deal and if the cars are usually in pretty good shape.

Why did it switch over to E-tran system? I think it’s lame…because if someone lived in Elk Grove and wanted to transport to somewhere else in the Sacramento area but does not have a car or wants to save gas…it would be hard. Also, why don’t we have a light rail station? I live in Elk Grove, and I like using the light rail alot (I’ve used it a couple of times because Sac City College has a light rail station and me and my friends would use it to go out to lunch) because it’s faster than a regular bus and safer than driving.

President Obama swept to office on the promise of a new kind of politics, but then how do you explain last week’s dismissal of federal Inspector General Gerald Walpin for the crime of trying to protect taxpayer dollars? This is a case that smells of political favoritism and Chicago rules.

A George W. Bush appointee, Mr. Walpin has since 2007 been the inspector general for the Corporation for National and Community Service, the federal agency that oversees such subsidized volunteer programs as AmeriCorps. In April 2008 the Corporation asked Mr. Walpin to investigate reports of irregularities at St. HOPE, a California nonprofit run by former NBA star and Obama supporter Kevin Johnson. St. HOPE had received an $850,000 AmeriCorps grant, which was supposed to go for three purposes: tutoring for Sacramento-area students; the redevelopment of several buildings; and theater and art programs.

Mr. Walpin’s investigators discovered that the money had been used instead to pad staff salaries, meddle politically in a school-board election, and have AmeriCorps members perform personal services for Mr. Johnson, including washing his car.

two buddies going to sac town. On a bright sunny day , two friends are on a road trip and drive in two different cars. The two vehicle, Car A and Car B, move along interstate 80 in two different lanes going toward Sacramento.
1.) Car b is 200 m ahead of Car A and is traveling with a constant velocity of 30.0 m/s.
2.) Car A has veloctity 40.0 m/s. The driver observes Car B and applies her brakes, causing a constant acceleration of -0.100 m/s^2. In other words, Car A starts to slow down.

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ―Sacramento’s homeless rate is rising fast. With more foreclosures, jobs lost and full shelters, all you have to do is walk downtown or cruise the American River and you’ll meet people who are homeless for the first time.

The sea of tents along the American River is hard to miss, and their number is growing.

“Anywhere from 20 to 50 people a week is showing up out here that just became homeless,” said Steve Kruse, a homeless man. “There are shelters, but they’re filling up so fast.”

Many of the men and women in the tents lost their jobs and then their home.

Robert Booker was laid off after working four and a half years for a Sacramento property management company, but managed to snag an open spot in a shelter. The tent he was setting up near the river was for his friend, but he is concerned he will end up there as well.

Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson knows the crisis is growing. As foreclosure and unemployment rates skyrocket, the homeless rate is now on the same track. From 2007 to 2008, Sacramento County’s “new homeless” rate rose a whopping 15 percent.

The last count showed the number of homeless with no shelter at all up 26 percent. That’s 1,200 people living on the street or in a car.

Mayor Johnson says the new homeless plan he’s working on may include a regulated tent city. “I can’t say tent cities are the answer to the homeless population in Sacramento, but I think it’s one of the many things that should be considered and looked at,” he said.

Kruse says the public should consider who could be next to face that situation. “Prepare! Don’t turn your back on us today, because tomorrow, you’ll be living next to us,” he said.

Can anyone please help a Soldier with a place to stay in Sacramento, Ca?

After 4 yrs of Honorable Service, I am leaving the Army and going back to Sacramento. Oct 5th was my last day of Active Duty. I have my own car, so I am driving back. I’m very nice and easy to get along with. I don’t want to go back and be alone…. My goal is to begin truck driving school when I get there asap; I need the work and a place to stay. Any generosity and hospitality is appreciated. For now, I can offer my expensive furniture and pay rent when I find work.

if somebody donates a vehicle to me, how can they get a tax break for this? who determins how much?
i have a program that is going to be set up as a non-profit buisness working with cars and teens. will this make a diffrence?

have any one ever donated a car on your taxes if so how much do they give you back on the car alone and year?

my unc told me i can donate my car . to whom can i donate too its only 89 cadi and it works i heard you can get the blue book value is that true
